Eligibility

Eligibility for PEBA's insurance programs varies depending on whether you are an active employee, a retiree or fall into another category. To find out if you may be eligible for benefits, select your member type below:

Special eligibility situations

A special eligibility situation is an event that allows members to change coverage outside of open enrollment. Learn more about special eligibility situations here.

 

Optional employers

Local governmental entities in South Carolina may be eligible to participate in the state insurance benefits program. Eligible local governmental entities generally include political subdivisions of the State, such as counties, municipalities, and special purpose districts, as well as governmental agencies or instrumentalities of those political subdivisions. If you are unsure of your employer’s eligibility, reach out to our Customer Contact Center. If your entity is an eligible optional group, PEBA welcomes your interest in the program.

 

Eligible optional groups interested in participating in the state insurance program should review the Optional Employer Handbook and Application and the Insurance Benefits Guide. To apply, complete the application in the handbook and return it with your signed agreement, along with a $500 non-refundable application fee.
